A Passion for Helping and Nurturing Growth: Christine’s Volunteer Journey
Christine Park’s volunteer journey is a testament to the power of direct connection and the joy of giving back. While staying in Vancouver, she was determined to find a role that went beyond the routine tasks often associated with volunteering. “I wanted to work directly with people with disabilities,” she recalls, highlighting her desire to make a meaningful difference rather than simply assist with administrative or housekeeping duties.
Volunteering with the Disability Foundation quickly became a calling for Christine. She started with BCMOS and DIGA where the programs offered her direct client interaction and the chance to share her love for outdoor activities—both aspects she highly values. Catering to clients based on their different personalities and preferences, Christine also learned the importance of attentiveness and effective communication in creating personalized experiences.
Christine discovered a passion for gardening at the Kerrisdale Community Garden in Kerrisdale. Under the guidance of Keith—the 2024 DIGA program assistant—she learned the ins and outs of maintaining the garden. From watering and pruning to troubleshooting plant ailments like treating mildew on a squash plant with a simple baking soda solution, every task was a small act of nurturing that culminated in tangible rewards. “Even though I wasn’t directly working with clients there, knowing that my efforts helped yield crops they would enjoy made every minute worthwhile,” she explains.

In addition to volunteering at the Kerrisdale community garden, Christine also volunteered with BCMOS’ hiking and paddling programs. One of her most memorable experiences came during a kayaking session. She recounted a touching moment with a client recovering from a stroke who initially hesitated to open up. With gentle questions and genuine care, Christine helped her overcome the barriers of isolation. “Hearing how much that time meant to her was incredibly rewarding,” she shares, a sentiment that perfectly encapsulates the heart of her volunteer work.

Balancing a busy life that takes her across the globe, Christine finds solace in the flexibility the program offers. Whether it’s gardening, kayaking, paddle boarding, or hiking, the diverse range of activities lets her choose what fits her schedule and interests. Though her time was limited last summer, each moment was a reminder of why she volunteers: to create empowering, memorable experiences for both the clients and herself.
For those considering joining the Disability Foundation Network’s volunteer programs, Christine’s advice is simple: “If you’re looking for a truly meaningful experience—especially if you’re interested in healthcare or working with people with disabilities—this is the best opportunity in Vancouver. It’s so rewarding, and every session leaves you feeling fulfilled and connected.” Her journey is not only an inspiring example of personal growth but also a heartfelt invitation for others to get involved and make a difference.
